Kennings on the Isis

Ekphrasis after a print by Sue Wheeler

Text of the poem

Wheel-floaters, water-strokers, engine-phutters,
leaf-wavers, seed-throwers, bee-lovers,
sky-scarves on boat-houses,
boat-birds on sky-mirrors,
sky-laser radiating bone-heat joy.

Shade-makers, bird-holders, soil-drinkers,
wing-teasers, colour-flashers, garden-thieves,
twirl-circles’ night-lines,
water-road’s light-shards,
muscle-songs sliding with salt-lick grins.

Berry-grog, air-gardens, voice-throws,
sun-hats, stilt-shoes, laugh-choirs,
pole-tuggers’ dip-pulls,
suface-skimmer’s wake-dance,
river-hunger singing its root-mud swoon.

Thanks to The Writers' Greenhouse for the prompt to write ekphrasis about Sue Wheeler's print and to Sue Wheeler for so generously sharing her artwork.
